What Is an Avernwake?

The dead belong beyond the threshold. The living do not.

When a living soul crosses the boundary of death without dying, the infernal realms feel the disturbance left behind. A wake. An Avernwake.

It's pronounced AV-ern-wake. The name joins Avernus, the old Roman name for a gate to the underworld, with wake, the trail something leaves as it passes.

Why the title is a question

We chose a name that makes you ask what it means. We're not going to answer all of it here. Some of the disturbance is felt before anyone understands where it comes from, and the story gets to tell you the rest.

What we can say: Elias Ward is alive, and the place he's entering was not made for the living. Everything that happens in AVERNWAKE starts with that.
